untonuggan: four different colored panels of the MRI image of a brain (brain)

Background: I take Celebrex for pain because so far (besides Lyrica, which really works for nerve pain not joint pain), nothing else works. My doctor said the next thing to try would be a heavier narcotic, and I am not a fan of that class of drugs if I can possibly avoid it.

Recently: So when I was in the hospital they took me off my Celebrex (a pain medication), but didn't give anyone a clear reason why. The nursing staff apparently kind of implied to my father that maybe-sorta it might have been an oversight of not getting put into the computer, but they weren't sure and of course couldn't say because litigation hush hush.

None of my regular doctors wanted to restart the Celebrex without knowing why it was stopped. Meanwhile, I was/am getting into an increasingly bad pain flare. Like, can't really spin at all because I can't stand because my feet hurt too much because my plantar fasciitis is flaring, and a spinning wheel thus wouldn't work either. Frell. (Which is why I'm now playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf as a coping mechanism right now, but that's another post. *squees to self*)

Yesterday: The pain got so bad that I was getting srsly depressed, so my mom suggested I just take the damn Celebrex already. So I did. And then about an hour later I had a seizure. And another. And another and another and another. I think I had about 10-20 in the first hour. We lost count. Meanwhile my partner tried hard not to say, "I told you so," because she'd sent me an email on drug interactions and apparently Celebrex does not play nice with my other drugs, most notably Lithium and Abilify. In extreme cases, it can cause seizures, muscle twitching, and, oh wait for it, intestinal bleeding.
Now: It would be so great if all my problems could be traced to one source, even though I really really really Do Not Want this pain right now. Celebrex has been "great", at least for pain, in that I could do more than lie on the couch and go "ow." So I really hope we can get this under control.

Until then, I guess I'll be playing a lot of New Leaf and other video games. And watching TV. Hey, maybe Celebrex caused my book-reading-halting brain fog, too. Wouldn't that be great/terrible?

ETA: Also, due to med half life, I can look forward to another 2 days of side effects at least. Weeeee!

Oh, dear.

I found celebrex made me more drowsy/brainfogged than usual. Ibruprofen, too. I've had a lot of Drs be skepticl at me about this, but recently I found a (multiply peer reviewed) site by a university that said

"Do NSAIDS cross into the
nervous system?

Yes, this is why some people get side effects such as dizziness, headaches and drowsiness."

Ugh, doctors have been skeptical of it at you? But we (pharmacists) are required to put a warning label on prescription NSAIDs to that effect. It's bright red! Not subtle at all.

Hunh. My prescription cox-2 inhibitor has no such warning label on it.

Big doses of ibuprofen totally make me sleepy, and a GP once corrected me that I wasn't ALLERGIC to tylenol, it simply interacted oddly with my central nervous system.

Ack, good that you know, but bad that you had to find out that way. I hope it's out of your system soon.

Hugs, I sympathize regarding the plantar fasciitis pain.

Did you just get New Leaf? How is it?

:( That's a horrible way to find out that the Celebrex may very well be the cause of the seizures.

Med side effects were one of my first thoughts when you told me what was going on; I have a few family and friends on various medications for multiple conditions, and the more meds you are taking, the more likely the chance of an adverse drug interaction. Many psych meds AND pain meds come with neurological side effects. So, if this is what is causing things that would be... both great and awful. Great because woo, it isn't something permanent and disabling! Awful because the Celebrex was helping you and I know how shitty it is to have to go off of a med that is doing good for one thing because it is causing bad for another. *gentle hugs* and good luck sorting it all out.

What a shame that a med that had been working so well for you has suddenly turned on you! But hopefully you'll be able to consign the seizures to the past in a few days, at least. *hugs*

I was so happy/relieved for you to read this news! I hope that something else will work for your pain though!

Also, I have dropped Mim off at your house. I didn't add to her tail because I thought it should be left alone and I was nervous to do the fangs, but you have what you need for that:D <3

Well, I am not sure whether to be happy for you that there's a pretty darn clear indication of what was causing the seizures (and maybe the crohn's symptoms???), or really bummed that you don't have a pain med that is effective at, ya know, diminishing pain *and* doesn't cause other problems. Also that it'll take several days for the side effects to wear off. :p

But I am very glad you ave Animal Crossing and are enjoying it!

Oh, good, not another diagnosis. But the painkiller trouble... :/
Best of luck getting that sorted out/finding something else that works.

Uff da!

Well, this is a bit of a mixed blessing, isn't it? You may have a cause for both the seizures and the Crohn's-like symptoms and yet off the drug that has been giving you pain relief.

I send lots of good thoughts for figuring out what's behind all this, and what can make you happy and active and so on again...

holey moley!

For the record, it's my understanding that cox-2 inhibitor caused ulcers will look different microscopically to ulcers dvd to crohn's. Hope you can find something to control your pain that doesn't give you seizures!!

Just FYI, there was an ad for Celebrex in whatever magazine Partner was reading while waiting with me at the dentist's office this morning, and I pointed to it and said, "There! That's the medicine that gives Liz seizures!"

I am glad you have at least one cause pinpointed, and I rather hope it's the cause of the Crohn's-type symptoms too, because then the fix is simple (maybe not easy, but somewhat simple).

At any rate, booooo seizures! Yaaaaaaaay accidental scientific method! :-P

I somehow missed this when it was first posted, but it is good to hear that you may have pinpointed the cause of the seizures, although, awful, that you've had to deal with it, and also, the ongoing pain issues.
