Sung to the tune of "What can you do with a drunken sailor," of course. ;)

Turns out, quite a lot, if you mix 'n match with other yarns. Take, for example, the 18 yards of uber soft undyed Targhee I decided to play with rather than list on my shop. I paired it with a ball of Cascade 128 (which is 128 yards of chunky superwash merino omg) that I had gotten on sale.

Doesn't look like that much yarn, right?

What can you do with 18 yards of handspun yarn?
A ball of forest green Cascade 128 machine spun yarn surrounded by a hank of handspun thick-and-thin white Targhee yarn. The label for the Targhee (my shop label) peeks out from under it.

I thought maybe I'd get a hat with a couple of stripes out of them.

Well I'm mostly done with the hat, and this is what I've got. (I would post finished photos, except I suspect I will be finishing this hat partway down I-95 and typing this on a mobile device seemed a nightmare >.<)

What can you do with 18 yards of handspun yarn?
A hat knit halfway up the decrease section from the above yarns. About half of each remain on the table beside it. The hat begins with hated 1x1 ribbing (why is it so useful, why), continues with plain stockinette and then has 2 rows of white handspun, a row of green, and two rows of white handspun centered on the hat. It's kind of like a Charlie Brown hat, but in green.

I still have about half of each left, so I'm not sure what to knit next. I'm torn between refining my headband pattern OR knitting some sort of Celtic-inspired necklace/bracelet. Or something else. I'm sure I'll decide on I-95.

What can you do with 18 yards of handspun yarn?
Close up of the rows of white handspun showing the variation of weight (i.e. thick and thin-ness) and texture. This is one of my earlier yarns - part of why I didn't list it - so it has more variation than many of the others.

NO KIDDING. I am still a fairly novice knitter, but I've done some fairly complicated (though limited) cable work, a mostly lace work sweater, 2x2 ribbing several times. Decided to make a hat for a short project (so far everything I've finished is a sweater, and I am a slow knitter!), and it has about a half an inch or a bit more of 1x1 ribbing. I think I knit the same row at least three or four times before I gave up and asked for help. As suspected (one of two guesses) I'd messed up on the initial row, so there were two knits (or two purls, not sure which) next to each other, messing everything up! You wouldn't think 2x2 would be so much easier, but it really, really is!

Cable work, fine (with come challenges, but nothing major). Lace work: same. 1x1 ribbing? Noooooooooo!!!!!!

Oooh! Favourited your store, and following the blog (as Kiwimedievalist). I love your stuff, and, in reading "Why a Spindle", I have to say I did take mine along to a couple of boring meetings, and it gave me something to do while listening - much more obtrusive had I taken the spinning wheel! I might have to get back to the spindle, so I get to get something spun away from the little grey terror at home.
