Look, I started a dreamwidth account!

It brings back memories. My first blog was a livejournal blog, and started out strong. I even learned my first html through lj. Unfortunately, lj gradually devolved as the site was taken over by ads and corporatism, and my friendslist gradually snuck off to facebook, twitter, tumblr, wordpress, blogspot, etc.

I'm so glad that dreamwidth is a new alternative, and that it's part of the free-as-in-freedom community. (I plan to upgrade to a paid account when I'm not on a public internet connection in order to better support this endeavor.)

Now that I'm done preaching to the converted (or soon-to-be-converted), I'll begin the obligatory "I plan to use my new blog for X" part of this post.

I have a degree in history; a worthy field but one I find myself not suited for. I specialize(d) in African/African American/African diaspora history, and completed two major research projects in those areas. I think I realized the field wasn't for me after I spent a summer researching lynching. (Highly depressing, sad, and infuriating. Made me doubt humanity as a whole. Don't even get me started on "lynching postcards," which I'm not even going to link to.) While I love history and realize I could switch to another field, I find it demoralizing. I consider the injustices of the past and just get really...angry.

Left adrift, I gradually rediscovered the writing that had gotten me through much of high school and part of college. I'd abandoned my creative writing classes to take requirements and things in my major. (Let's face it, the history of sex and sexuality in America is a pretty badass class.)

So here I am - making the most of life with disabilities and enjoying my writing. Who knows where it's going, or when/if I'll get published. I'm interested in the journey.

I'm currently working on a Young Adult novel, tentatively entitled "Beneath the Ice." News of that will get posted here. I wrote drafts for six poems in the past two days; expect to see that here, too.

Posting of actual writing may vary, as I'd like to submit it for publication before posting it online.
